One afternoon my best friend invited me along for a late afternoon hike in our local high desert mountains. Being Spring time in Southern California, the weather was perfect and the flora was still green and blooming (not the case once Summer arrives).
We climbed down to a dry creek bed and followed along to a trail on the other side.
Almost as soon as we emerged from the creek bed we began to find odd items left behind by people from what seemed to be decades ago. As much as I hate to see trash sitting in a natural habitat, I couldn't help but notice the way the sunlight was causing the rusted box to shine like gold. I found it pretty, in an odd way.
After walking along a dirt road for a while, we came across this field filled with 50+ old wood stoves of some kind. Derik thinks they may have been left over from the nearby orchard that would have needed to keep their trees warm during the cold winters, many years ago.
How about an old tractor? Seems like it would be fun to take for a spin, eh? Just kidding. I doubt it runs at all anymore. It's definitely got some rust on it, but what's with the plastic bucket? Obviously someone has been around this thing recently...
On our way back to the highway we discovered this. I sure hope whoever drove it there got out okay. A crashed car was the last thing I thought I'd see at the bottom of a creek bed in the mountains.
The highlight of our hike that afternoon was definitely this little guy, known as a horned lizard (or horny toad to locals). Horned lizards blend into their environment so well that we almost didn't spot this one at all!
