Getting to the falls was one of my favorite things I got to do on Kauai. Derik and I began the 7 mile round-trip journey in a kayak, paddling up the Wailua River from our dock in the town of Kapaa.
After 2 miles of paddling, we parked our kayak and took to the trail on foot for a mile and a half through lush, beautiful jungle.
It truly looked prehistoric as we walked the trail. We fell behind our group tour several times because we kept stopping to take pictures of the river we were hiking along, and fallen trees that were so tall they crossed from one side of the river to the other.
Then, we began to hear it. Quiet at first, but as we walked on, the thunder of the falls began to roar as we approached. We came around a bend and there it was: Secret Falls (aka Uluwehi Falls).
Here at the end of the trail, water crashed down 100 feet to the pool below. After setting down our backpacks and catching our breath, we decided to go for a swim in the cool water. I mean, that IS what we came for, right? The water really was quite cool since it came from atop tall mountains on the interior of the island. Nothing could have felt better in that moment than soaking in the beauty of the falls and the feeling of accomplishment after the journey it took to get to get us there.
